Vette(s): 1978 corvette silver anniversary

I have a bad window motor in a 1978 Corvette.  The window is stuck in the down position so i tore into it and found rivets on the window regulator holding it o the inside metal door frame.  Has anyone had to do this?  Most other years have bolts instead of rivets so not sure what to buy.  I can get the rivets off and get the window regulator off but not sure about the enire re-install.  any help is greatly !!! appreciated!!

My 78 has riits and power windows. I think you will have to drill them out.

Also if it is a power window open the door with the engine running hold the swithc in the up position and close the door hard.

It might losen the motor to get it to work.

Hello, You can also buy a rivet tool and rivets to attach it. I did a camaro that way. A little difficult with window attached, need a third hand.

I ordered my 78 with crank up windows to avoid this problem.  I also didn't know any better having never owned a car with power windows. 🥴

I bought a car with non operating power windows. I converted it Back to Crank! They go UP and DOWN, at my request. Every time!

My manual crank windows are hard to crank; It's like a 1/2 turn at a time, and kinda tight between me and the crank.  Wish (I think) I had power windows.

I just wish I had long arms like you. 😉  I can't reach and crank on the pax window from the driver's seat.

Hey Bill, I had the same hard to crank problem.  I took the crank assembly apart and all the grease was hard as a rock.

Cleaned and re-greased them and they work much easier.

In the past I have worked on the window mechanism on my '76 Chev. truck, but I just can't get my big hands inside the door to work on them now -- it was a royal pain even back then.  I guess that'll be a job for my mechanic next time he has the car in.

Thanks for the info!

Yup! Cozmoline is a bear after 40-50 years. The General didn't intend for the cars to be that valuable over time. Soon... they used the cheap stuff to get the cars out to the show room. Even Uncle Sam used it on the M1s to preserve them for transit. You cleaned them up after issued to you.  The best answer to hard cranking,  is to take them apart, clean them Real Good, then grease them with graphite and reinstall them. I crank mine up or down before I get in, or my passenger suits themselves. Of course when the Grandkids get in they don't know what that handle is for, and look for the button. Dimming the headlights for them with No Hands is another magic trick.

You don't have to get "inside" the door to take the window crank gears apart.  Once you have the door panel off, I think it's just 3 bolts that hold the crank mechanism cover on.  Once that is off, you can see the crank gears and get them out to clean.
