So I want to install a mirror on the right side. I know there is a factory mounted bracket on the left side and nothing on the right. I've seen mounting kits that have two screws that look like they have washers (or some sort of large head) to screw the mirror into.
My question is, is that going to be strong enough? I would hate to have the mirror bumped and pull the screws though the fiberglass. Is that an issue or it is stronger than I think? Is there some sort of aftermarket bracket I can put behind it for support?
What have you guys done?

Brian, I wouldn't do it, personally. It's a numbers matching car and IMHO I would just keep her like she is (stock). It's hard to find a car that's pretty much stock, like yours.

The bracket is held to the door with a couple of "nut-serts"(actually a bracket with built-in nutserts) from the backside of the panel. Then the mirror bolts to it. You'll need to drill
two small holes in the door to do this.
I wouldn't go for some flimsy aftermarket type mounts, myself...see if you can get one like the originals...they were dealer installed(on the pass side) until the late '70s, then factory installed.
The presence of a pass side mirror is not that big of a deal as far as "original" goes...I wouldn't let that be a deal breaker either.

When I purchased "The Toy" there was a mirror already installed on the passenger door, but it was poorly done and flopped around a lot. It was also a different size than the driver's side mirror (struck by Bubba I think!). I bought a matching set via eBay and reinstalled both without any problems.
Make sure to measure your driver's side mirror so you know which size to buy. I like having a right side mirror because it cuts down on the size of the blind spot.

I installed a pass. side mirror on my '71 as soon as I bought it. Got rid of that HUGE blind spot on the right side. Like Joel said, drill a couple of holes with inserts and mine has always been solid as a rock, no problem. They weren't original, though they should have been. Much safer IMHO... and look good too! Your's should use the 'small head mirror'.longhorn294 2008-05-22 22:35:42

There could be a metal tapping plate in the door at the location of the RH mirror. Holes for the well-nuts should go in to this tapping plate when you drill them.

Thanks for all of the info guys and gals. I am going to add the mirror. Since it was a dealer option, I'm not that worried about the resale value of the car. I got the small head mirror set and will put them on when they arrive.
