On my 72 4-spd; my backup lights stay on no matter what gear I'm in.  Is this just a bad switch on the tranny or something else?
Thanks.

Stuck reverse switch would be my vote (I believe it is engaged by the shifter)!

Although we used to wire them that way when I was a young hooligan on cruise night!!Embarrassed

Mine just did that on the trip to Carson City. The gang couldn't figure out if I was coming or goingLOLLOL.  I vote for the switch too. I will be checking mine out next week. Just got home after 11 hrs and 750 miles. I will let you know what I find. May be the plunger is just hanging up.

The reverse light switch is located on the transmission. it is bolted to the side cover, and has a linkage that connects it to the reverse shifter rod. if the light is staying on, it could be the linkage has fallen off(common problem), or the switch is bad.

Joel,

Couldn't it also be the neutral safety switch or is it just localized to the reverse switch?

The NSS is on the clutch pedal assembly on 4 speeds. The reverse light switch is on the trans, as shown above.
There is also a 3rd/4th gear switch on the front shift rod, sticking out of the side cover on TCS cars.
The NSS has nothing to do with the back-up(reverse) lights on 4 speeds, but it does on automatics...Dad's 72 is a 4 speed, so that's why the specific info for that.

Thanks for all the info; I ordered a new switch.  I guess when I crawl under there I'll see what's up.

Thanks, Joel.

I didn't realize there was a difference but it makes sense!
