Thanks for the info, I don't need a windshield, but I suspect that I may have some rust in the frame.

Vette(s): 77 lost along the way/ 73 4spd coupe, just purchased and in process of resto.

I have been looking for a replacement for my "beast".  Dated doesn't matter.  The e-hay price might be good but don't foreget to include shipping. In the case mentioned ,$60.00 plus,.  I called a local windsheild place, if not dated and a house call, $298.00, that was over the phone.  I ask about the "black stickey stuff", it is/was a standard sealer.  Just my 2 two cents

[QUOTE=2 cruzn] I went on the site Jim posted about and there was
some good info on there (thanks Jim) most  reference  3M
strip calk. Think that is what I will use.  Now to find it...

2Cruzn, you can get the 'cauk' at any automotive paint supply store. I bought a whole roll of it when I had my '74 painted. Be sure whoever reinstalls the windershield use a urethane sealer,( not silicon) as it will not hold water around the glass, which is what causes the rust on the w/s frame. The 3M part # for the 5/16" 'Ribbon Sealer' is: # 051135 08611. It is called 'Windo-Weld', and comes with little placement 'blocks' to space the glass around the frame. Remember, the w/s is a stressed part of the frame, so it really needs to be installed with the right stuff, so it will strenghten the whole assy. Don't remember how much the "ribbon" cost, but it wasn't a lot, very reasonable. Adams' Apple38420.8504050926

I have seen PS Auto Glass around... I am seriously thinking of buying the windshield.. with shipping still a good price... I would like to have the dated glass, but just not in the budget yet... I figure I could always do that later... figure whomever inherits this car can do it... since i won't sell it...

Thanks Adam... I'll get that... the installer is a pro and he mentioned the urethane when he was taking the old one out...

Can anyone give me an idea of the cost to repair a rusted WS frame, and how difficult would it be. Most likely I'll have to have someone else do the job.

Unfortunately, I 've had some pretty bad luck picking a good and honest shop. I have an excellent mechanic, but he doesn't do body work.

I did mine myself after having the windshield removed. Was not "too" bad. I had a lot of good metal in the header... I welded in a couple patches, and the rough area I smoothed out with body filler. If you need to replace the header or pillars... you are talking a bunch more, plus cutting the old out and welding in the new... the header alone is  about $200 at least parts are available. I also had to replace the interior trim around the windshield as the metal reinforcement in it was eaten up with rust too and looking kinda rough. That actually made it look it worse than it was. I got that trim new off e-bay for $110+.

Cruzn,

Thanks for the info, I don't even know if I have a problem, but I'm sure that I must have some sort of rust in the frame. At least it sounds like I can get parts for it if needed. This is way beyond my capabilities. I'll have to find someone to do it for me

You can find out quick by taking the trim off around the inside of the winshield especially the top piece around the miorror.... If you have had rust falling in your lap.. that is a sure sign of a problem.

Good luck.. and hopefully not as bad as you think...
