I have picked up a replacement for my rusty luggage rack on E-bay. What's going on underneath the rubber grommets? I had 1 screw that was a PITA to get out, and it sounded like something dropped under deck when I started loosening it. Do you need to get at bottom of these, or do they just push in from the top. Anyone done this, or have any tips??? Thanks.

There were different styles. The easy ones are rubber coated, and go in from the top. When the bolt is inserted and tightened, the bottom spreads out under the deck. They work well. You may want to replace all of them when you put the new rack on.

Yes, change them all. They are compression nuts. Get them from you loacl Ace hardware along with the stainless screws.

Thanks. It sounds like a good idea to replace them. Do the old ones (Rubber) just push through?

They are actually called well nuts. They insert from the top and as the screw tightens they swell up creating the grip. I also pushed one in by accident and it fell inside.
I think I found mine at UAP? I tried all the hardware stores and they looked at me like I was nuts (no pun intended!)
Good Luck
