Replacement Radio

I have been looking at various replacement radios, such as the classic autosound units.  Does anybody have any recommendations or bad experiences?

When I started restoration on my shark, the old radio was not original and a POS.  I thought I would find a working original radio on ebay and purchased one that supposedly worked.  Also had to put in original 8 or 10 ohm speakers (available from Corvette houses).  The radio I got did not work and probably would not have sounded good anyway.  You can get rehabbed original units on e-bay running in the $400 - $600 range (too rich for my blood). 

I decided to shelve the ebay unit for some future day (maybe have somebody restore it) and purchased a new 200 watt radio/cassette player from Electronic Solutions Ltd. (about a $120 and advertised to fit C3s under the C3 radio search on ebay).  The rep said it would work with an 8 ohm original speaker (mine where 10 ohm and it did work).  However, I put in new 4 ohm oval speakers where the originals go in the dash and hooked it all up and it works great.  Other advantages are that it has a connector in the back that an inexpensive cable can hook into for I-Pod or MP3 playback. 

Bear in mind I was looking to go cheap as a temporary solution and wanted a radio that would not look too flashy - just plain jane.  That is what I got and can add rear speakers when I get around to it.  There are much fancier units you can buy also, but I am pretty happy with it so far.  It just doesn't look original for those of purist nature.
