For what it's worth, you can buy a ball valve at Home Depo or Lowe's that already has the hose barbs as part of the casting. Cut the hose, install the valve, done for under 10 bucks. I personally prefer the hose barbs over the smooth stubs of copper tubing, less chance for the hose to blow off, and you really don't need the bleeder.

Can't remember upper or lower, but you want to install in the 5/8" line. The other line is 3/4". |thumb|

You can also find the valve in Advanced Discount auto. I would recommend a screw type valve vs a quarter turn valve. I had the quarter turn ball valve from the PO and it leaked by. Installed a screw type and now I have tight shutoff.

I think you mean a gate valve. The screw down handle closes a "gate" in the valve body that shuts off flow. What size did you use?

You should have a vacuum operated valve that shuts off the heater water from the factory!

Vette(s): 1980 L48 4 speed.
Three questions:

1. Does it make that big of a difference?

2. How does it effect the engine cooling since you're cutting off part of the circulation system?

3. What effects will this have on the heater core and return hose if they are dry for a while?

1. Yes it makes a big difference.
2. It won't affect engine cooling at all. This is a factor with some cars, 4 cyl Mopars for example, but not a GM. Some GM factory set ups have a vacuum operated cutoff valve from the factory to shut off the heater when the A/C is on.
3. The core does not go dry, there is coolant in the other line and core. You just stop it from circulating. You should open it for a short time once in a while to keep from building sludge.
