I've got an 82 CE and my hood is just starting to show some cracks in the clear coat.I took it to my bodyshop that has done great work on my Vette before. He knows he won't make much money on this but is doing it to keep my business. My paint and brown fade decal is not faded at all.He will reclear my hood for $128.00.My ? is how is this done.I went by his place after work but he was closed.I wanted to find out how this prossess works.Any body guys out there that can explain it for me?Thanks

Thats what I thought but what about the part that has the paint and fade decal showing through? How do they do that with out causing damage to the paint/fade?

Very carefully block sanding with water and very light paper.

zgator, Let us know how this turns out. I do some painting and i use clear. But If the cracks are deep and the emblems are showing through the clear. Iam not sure how this is going to look. But I have never tried this before, maybe it will work.

Sounds a bit risky to me, I'd like to hear about the results.
I've done some panel blending, but the cracking would be a concern. To get the area down to a point that the clear will cover, I would think he'd be in the base coat. Is it cracking over the decal? I'm not sure how I'd tackle that one without seeing it. Can you post a picture?

Maybe they block sand the clearcoat to smooth it out and then spray and buff the topcoat. Would filling the cracks make them disappear?

Well I can't take a pic, sorry.I can tell you that the problem is more of a peeling than cracking.Nothing has gone through the paint or decal. It seems to me that a lot of feathering would be in order.I've taken great care in making sure that it hasn't got any worse and if you look at it the paint and decal look like new so I'm pretty sure no real damage has happened.I know how much those hood fades cost.I don't even think you can get just the hood fade.I keep it out of the sun and allways have some wax on it.Should have it done over the holidays

I'm getting more curious by the minute! Peeling is delaminating. If you're keeping wax on it, it's getting in those cracks. Be very sure you tell your shop it has been waxed. Paint don't stick to it good.
To answer Dwright's question, no, filling cracks will not make them go away.
I'd really like to see some before and after shots. Can you email them? If the clear is feathered at the cracking, it may come out very wavy.
I really hate to be a nay sayer, I do hope it turns out for you!

Still haven't taken it in yet but it will bee soon.I will take a bunch of wax and grease remover to it before I take it in and I'll make sure he knows about the wax.Now that I think of it I don't have any wax on it.I do have a polish on it and I will also clay bar it and get it as clean as I can.He has done a lot of work for me over the years, enough so that if he says he can do it I beleive him.I'm also pretty anal about my car so I'm sure I'm over stating the problem.Anyway we'll see.
