OK, so I get the allen head and took the mirror off the 70. Thats right, quit a big deal in my world!
Anyway then decided to take the backing plate off just to clean things up a bit.
The backing plate only has 1 screw holding it in.
The other hole looks like it was filled in, kinda.

I got the mirror back on and everything tightened down. Cept its still a little loose. But it seems to be the pin with the allen head in it that isnt as tight as one would like.

So my question to you all is....
Is there supposed to be 2 screws in the backing plate?

If I replace the pin should I also replace the plate as well? (seems so)

Thanks again and hope I burn you all out on questions but I am way into this car!

John, it appears to me that the one hole that's filled in...is actually a broken off screw. You will have to drill it, then use an easy out to remove the remnant piece. There are definitely two screws which hold down the backing plate. Good luck on getting the broken screw outThumbs%20Up

Also, the mirror will not tighten without the rubber piece under the backing plate.

Got the rubber piece on. They must have painted over the broken screw as its a little red nob.

Well thats test my ability as I refuse to use a drill. I can see BAD THINGS HAPPENING!

I will have that done by someone who has done that before!

Chicken!!!!

Actually, John, chances are if you start drilling the screw, the drill bit will catch, and screw the broken part right on out the other side, where it would simply fall down into the bottom of the door. Just use a cordless drill with prolly a 1/8" bit.
Then again, I do unnerstand if you would rather not take a chance on pin-striping the door... Adams' Apple2009-01-26 21:00:39

Chicken is RIGHT Joel!

Clint Eastwood once said "A mans greatest strength is to know his weakness".

I live by that.

My strength is I got $50.
My weakness is drilling in car doors.Rolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing

The painter probably broke the screw while he was removing the mirrors to paint the car. He then just painted over it. It's not a hard job to remove the piece, but if your comfort level isn't there, it's best taking it to someone you can trust. How about Duncanville Tx...ask for a guy named Joel. I know HE can do it!

Dont you think every state needs a Joel?
Maybe at least a region?

One per country isnt enough!

As a group we need to get on that!

I am lucky there are 2 folks within 20 miles who I trust to do a good job.

Now if I was just drilling a hole, I am all over that.

If I am drilling a hole WITHOUT screwing up the threads, well that's where the feathers come out.

People like yourself and many others give me the knowledge to at least go at something with a bit of information.

Just think, someday you all can rib me about "remember when you wouldnt even drill in your car door" while I'm doing some frame off resto deal!Wink

Give me time thats all I ask.Clap
