So my rear bumper emblem was not mounted right and I broke it cleaning my Vette the other day
, it must have been glued in the holes with no mounting nuts and was not flush on the bumper. I am going to order a new emblem. Is there some kind of plate behind the bumper that the emblem is to go through in order to put the nuts in place, it seems like there is a plate back there that is not lined up with the mounting holes. What is the best way to install the new emblem when I get it?

Yes Aaron there is a plate with holes in it that the 3 emblem pins stick through. They take the hollow spin on nuts (I can't remember the name due to me old timers right now.)
Depending on where you purchase your emblem the backing plate might come with your emblem.
I may have one you can have and the nuts/ I 'll check later today and shoot you a PM if I do.

Checking all my catalogs there is nothing about a backing plate included with the emblems. They do sell the nuts seperate. I am probably going to order the emblem from Eckler's on Monday and have them match the lowest price of $39.95 that I found in a couple other catalogs.

My 1976 early has the emblem design indented in the rear bumper with three holes for the emblem pins attached with nuts...

Eckler's could not tell me if the backing plate comes with the emblem or not. They did match prices so I ordered the emblem (Eckler's 47.99 matched Rik's & Bair's 39.95) and I also ordered the door panel armrest repair pads (Eckler's 42.99 matched Bair's & Volunteer Vette 35.00).

What I couldn't figure out is how to get behind the bumper? I think the backing plate is back there. Would lowering the spare tire help access behind the bumper at all?
The bumper does have three indented slightly tilted oval holes for the pins to go through, mine is a late '76 with the larger emblem. Aaron1976 2008-06-05 01:34:08

I might get the new emblem by this Friday and I'll find out if a backing plate is included. I have to see if the old plate is stuck behind the bumper also. I'll let you know if I need one or not, thanks.
