I had my radio rebuilt this past April.
It was in pretty rough shape but i'm glad I did it, sounds great.
Found the shop in Hemmings Motor News

I like the original /stock look so I had the radio repaired.

These are the repairs:

Re-soldered over 50 connections
(two of the digits were not working and were repaired)

Replaced 3 capacitors
Replaced the tape belt
Aligned the coils for best reception
Cleaned & lubed the controls & tuning mechanism
Cleaned the dial area & polished the dial window
Modified it for more bass & treble
Options:
Installed the 3ft. ipod/mp3 input jack
2 new Front Speakers

Vette(s): 1974 L-48 Auto. Just your basic Vette. GM crate motor w/vortec heads and intake. Crane cam. Scorpion rockers, Edelbrock carb. Lots of parts still in boxes... :(
I started driving in the late 70's, and there is no telling how many of these GM radios I ripped out of trucks and cars and threw away over the years.  What a mistake...  Have you seen what they are selling for??

Crazy.

S/M ELECTRO - TECH, INC. I had this company rebuild my radio years ago for the 74. They removed all the old transistors and converted it over to a newer electronic inner guts but kept the actual body and look. I also had them add an auxillary input for an ipod or outside music supply. It wasnt cheap but it works great and I am very happy with it. There customer service was very good as well. Why don't you guys tell us how much it cost to get your radios repaired at these places?

Spill the beans.
