I want to re dye the (interior) vinyl trim around the rear window of my '79.

Any suggestions on a good primer for this job?

I used Dupicolor adhesion promoter,it's a clear primer, works great, just make sure you clean the part real well b-4 using it.I used Fantastic and a fine Scotch -Brite pad, rinse with water, dry it completely, then the primer, then 2 or 3 coats of color.let it flash good b-4 next coat, dont get the paint to thick,it will cover up the artificial leather grain in the plastic.let it dry for 4 or 5 hours and WA-LA brand new part ClapClapClap

Kevin,
Watch out for overspray and wear a mask so you don't coat your lungs with that stuff.

Are you going for the same color or a different color?

I have done a lot of vinyl and the key is removing all of the old vinyl cleaner residues, i.e. armorall, silicon, etc.  I have used SEM brand products, but most important is their Vinyl Prep #38344.  Its also amazing how it restores some of the pliability to old, hardened vinyl.  You must first, however, test it on an inconspicuous spot as it will oversoften some types of vinyl and you wind up with something that looks kinda wrinkled but where it does work, its amazing.

pdupler,
Thanks for the heads up on the SEM. I'll get ahold of a small amount and test it out.

Dwright,
the upper portion of this trim is dark blue, like the rest of my interior. However, the larger bottom portion is black. I've looked at a lot of later C3s and found that GM must have done that portion in black across the board.
I'm going to do it all in dark blue. IMHO it just looks like it should've  been that way from day 1.

I've been wanting to do the same thing with the vinyl pieces around my rear window.  It looks like the PO tried to refinish a couple of pieces and messed the up.   I found this document on the SEM website.

I looked in to the SEM product at a local automotive paint supplier. I was told it may actually damage the material from an older vehicle.  No harm, No foul.
I used a new Scotch Brite pad, water & elbow grease. It took a while before it really cleaned up.
I used the Duplicolor Clear Adhesion Promoter and then four light coats of the Corvette America Dark Blue Interior Dye.
It came out great & I'm real happy with it!

Thanks everyone for the input!

KDADDY,

Did you use the vinyl dye in a spray can or did you use a spray gun?
