Power window fix

The '82 we bought (less than two months ago) came with
one power window not working (driver's side.) When we
push the switch we can hear a faint click sound (so this
probably means it's not the switch, and the next step
is to remove the door panel, right?) Any helpful
hints on door panel removal? And what typically needs
replacing--the motor, the regulator, or both???
Thanks for your help and advice!

It sounds like the motor. I've got a problem similar, but I just need the regulator gear.

Start with the simple stuff (read: inexpensive) first. Is it binding up? Is there a ground fault somewhere? Eliminate all the simple stuff first, then move on to the more complicated things.

82 door panels are different from the '77s, so I don't want to tell you the wrong thing. Basically, remove all the screws you can find, then look for more! You'll know that you've gotten them all when the panel is easy to move (or at least that was the way it was with mine...). After you get the panel off, there will be an access panel held on with 8 or so bolts. Remove this panel to gain access to the motor. If you look down from the top of the door into the window cavity. You should be able to see if anything is binding up.

Thanks for your advice! We'll get the door panel off and
see what needs to be done.

I had a sluggish driver's power window so I removed the door panel (take the door lock knob off, remove the arm rest, remove the plastic trim plate around the door latch handle, and remove the remaining screws) and then remove the plastic barrier (if present) and the access panel to expose the motor. I unplugged the connector on the back of the motor and cleaned all the contacts. I put some white grease around them and plugged the connector back in. The motor ran better and the window goes up and down much faster. Good luck with your fix!
