I agree.  The problem is called heat soak.  Corvette Central has the stock shield.  http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~partsort
I'm sure other Corvette aftermarket providers will also stock it.

Vette(s): 1982CE,32,000 and counting. (fast!!) 1981 Vette, black on black. ZZ4 (quick!!)
I've had this problem all my life. Everybody is right on the money about the solenoid. A heat shield will work or like back in the day everybody would swap out the stock solenoid and put a ford one mounted somewhere on the inside fenderwell. Way far away from the heat.
