As soon as I fix one thing, something else brakes...

I went to unlock the passenger door yesterday, and the key goes in, then just turns both ways but nothing happens. I think the lock cylinder fell into the door cavity.

Could this have happened? Is it as simple as taking the door panel off to fix it?

I wouldn't call it simple, but it isn't too bad a job. The back side of your lock is attached by a rod to the latch mechanism. It sounds like that connection has been "compromised"!! You should be able to take off the door panel and see the issue. Do you have an Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) for your '79? It has some good drawing of all the components in your door. If not then I would recommend taking of the other door panel as well (assuming that it is working OK!) and compare the two. You should be able to see what is missing/broken. I also highly recommend that you clean and grease all moving parts while in there. Definitely worth the extra effort!!

hope you have small hands. its a tight fit back there. if the rod catch fell off you will need a magnet to get it from the bottonm of the door.
