Hi!

I'm looking into the cost of a paint job for a 78 I just bought.  The local Vette dealer wants 10k, is one us dreaming?Confused

Thanks

Greg

As the saying goes...you get what you pay for, but you have to determine exactly what's needed. Fiberglass has it's own sets of strengths and weaknesses and requires a shop and refinishers that know what they're doing. Fiberglass won't rust, but it can get stress cracks that require repair.

A lot depends on what your car needs...does it need fiberglass repairs? Does it need to be taken down to the gel coat for refinishing? The more it needs the more it will cost.

Not to say the dealer is out of line (he may well be), but check with other shops and make sure they know what they're doing with fiberglass and compare what you're getting for the money.

A good paint job on a Vette will start at about the $5k range and go up depending on what's needed to do the job right.

This is something you really only want to do once so get it right the first time.

Greg,
I had my 77 painted this year.  It needed a lot of work!!  It had about 6 layers of poor paint jobsAngry!!   It took 4 months and 5K but it looks great!!

Do your homework on where ever you get it done, they really need to know what they are doing!!   It took me a while to find a place that would do it.  Most shops are too busy with accident repairConfused...

Good luck!!   It will pay off!!

I have the same car as you, Bulldog51--and I'm wondering if one reason for the 10K estimate is that the paint scheme on the SA's is more involved than the normal one-color job.

Maybe they're factoring in having to shoot two different shades of grey on the upper/lower halves of the body, plus apply all the decals on top of it.

Still seems pretty high regardless, but I thought I'd offer up this possible/partial explanation for it...

in any event, let us know what you end up deciding to do--and welcome to Team Tiburon!

$10k IS high, unless there is some substantial bodywerk to be done. You should be able to get a show-ready paint for around $7000-$8000. The two-tone does add some to the cost, but not two grand more.
Get away from the dealer, and check out a body shop. Ask around...get references. See if there is a local Corvette club in your area. Those are the guys that will know where the good paint shops are. my 2c

Greg, there should be a lot of good painters in your state? Go on the hunt, ask your paint suppliers, car clubs, motorcycle shops, just like Joel says. You will find someone who is good and at a fair price? It takes some time and effort..
