I sanded entire front end and filled large problem areas.  I then resanded.  I removed the hood and shot it with primer and sanded again to smooth out...see pics.  Look at the pics, should I sand to the gel coat or first layer of primer?  Please tell me no and all I need to do is shoot more primer and sand.  I'm a newbie at this and and not looking for a perfect paint job.  Couple of pics of the hood:

I would rub it down using a long block, like 18''till you can just see base showing tru. then reprime

and guide coat it and rub again with long block .

Is that crazing in old paint? if so rub it till it's clear.or it will break thru down the line.

OK, What grit should I use?  I don't want to scratch the crap out of it and make more work for myslef in the long run.

240-320 dry rub before priming, after priming 320-400 grit.

I like dry  rub.no water toblow out when you paint.

first coat I'd use a epoxy primer.it sticks well.then regular hibuild primer.

if you need to rub the epoxy, dont leave it too long as it dries very hard.

And if you really mess up the hood, I have my stock '81 hood you can have. That just would need a scuff and shoot the color.

Going to the original paint...so far.  Only have about a third done, which I am  happy about.

No worries Eboman!  Thanks for the offer.

Bring sanding blocks and beer to the next get-together.  It will look like the Overhauling show with someone on every panel scuffing away!
