So what you guys are saying is that I can't use an MSD ignition box becasue my distributor is a ready to run model? WHy? OMG? What? I thought you could! And whats up with the HEI? THis setup is better than HEI, right? My dad was giving me crap b/c all of the retail engines came whit HEI and I got somethign different.

Louis, that distributor will work fine for your engine as it is. All you need to buy is a external coil. You dont need to spend any more money than the price of one outside ignition coil. Buy this one and you got what you need:http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=MSD%2D8202&N=120+4294925143+4294925140+301087

And yes that distributor should perform smoother and better than the stock HEI.

All I said was that Louis MIGHT want to CONSIDER a CD box, and should run the sprial core wires which he should run regardless, that said, my guess is that this ready to run distr. is an inductive type setup like a HEI but with a small cap and external coil for tight places, I have read and been told that you can run a MSD CD box on a inductive type distr. which a HEI distr. is, and also I believe this "ready to run" distr. is, can anyone clear this up? might have to call MSD tech to get the answer.

OK, heres the answer, went to the Summit cat, under "Pro Billit ready to run", says features a MAGNETIC pick up, etc etc, then to the CD box section, under MSD-6A, "works with points, MAGNETIC trigger, or GM HEI ign. sys"., I'am guessing that Magnetic pickup and trigger are the same, Happy New Year everyone!

I was looking at it aswell and I decided taht probably the 6AL would be the best. But I noticed something else about it that I am unsure of. THe gear on the old stock distrib moves freely, and the ger on the new one is kinda stiff. As you may know more friction = less HP. WHy is it so stiff compared to the old one?

The 6AL is good, small blocks stop making H.P. and torq. at 6k-7k depending on what ya got, the 6-7k module's would be good, as far as the movement difference my guess is that your old distr. might be a little worn out, just as long as the distr. shaft has slight up and down movement when distr. is installed so as not to put a bind on the distr. and cam gears.

The stiffness in your distributor shaft is common with a new distributor. The small amount of drag won't affect you HP in any measureable way. It's still too slight.
