I had a 69 and a 75, both ragtops. Use to load them down with tires to run at the track. Never had a problem with cracks. 175,000 miles on one, 150,000 miles on the other. Carried stuff higher than the tops, no problems. Install it right with the proper devices and you should not have a problem.

We have a luggage rack on Pam's '73 and I have carried almost anything within reason you can think of and no problems. The biggest pain is when you have several suite cases on on the rack, you can't see very well out the rear window or rear view mirror. Another thought is when your laying out everthing you want to carry on the luggage rack, make sure you can access the gas door. As far a luggage racks and T-Tops go, well I've heard the luggage rack refered to as the T-Top launcher. To carry T-Tops, you have to have the T-Top barrcakets and an original luggage rack. If you've seen an original rack next to an after market you'll see what I'm talking about. Good luck.

I've got the 8 bar luggage rack that you need to install the t-top brackets. Here is what they look like with the t-tops on. Kind of like a cool spoiler effect. See signature photo.

I picked up a 6 bolt rack for $100 (CAD). I know that for a 76 I should have an 8 bolt rack. However I'm not worried about being THAT original. Thanks for the comments.

| Optics&Flares said: Hey Scot- Did you do your mileage check with a calculator and two tank top-offs, or by eyeballing the fuel gauge? Was it downhill all the way? (Please consider that to be good-natured ribbing) There is probably no factory American V-8 in history that has achieved 30 mpg, let alone a Corvette. Are you sure??????? |
Yeah, for the record, I actually calculated and such. But. I missed an important mile marker. Fillup #3 or something didn't get recorded, so when i checked it....was like...WHAT 300 miles on 9.5 gallons? COOL. Having driven 1200 miles+(that was just one week) since and never getting more than 14mpg, I'm SURE there was a mistake.

I read some time ago in a GM owners manual that the luggage rack weight limit is 45lbs. Although this doesn't seem like much, it really is.
The t-top brackets reproductions are available. They make life much easier when traveling any distance and you want the tops off.
If you are interested in the brackets you can email me direct. alex@vettespecialties.com

Store the T-tops and luggage in the 4-4-2 and have them follow you across the country !
