So I have no lighter in the Rookmobile and never really cared or needed one. Like anyone is going to smoke in my vette. But lately I have had the urge to have a power source for my cell or iPod....so here's my question. Has anyone tried to convert their lighter to a 12V power outlet? Will it fit? Is there anything special I need to know? I see aftermarket ones on the eBay designated for boats and RVs, will something like that even work?

I removed the lighter from it's original location so that I could install a push button start under the tray(works great). Now I need something to plug my cell phone/mp3 players into during long trips.  I was just going to put the 12 v outlet in with the battery or in the other compartment.  I just saw the various outlets available at autozone

Uh...Dan...? The lighter socket IS a 12v power supply. You can use it for anything that will plug into it, like a radar defector, ect. They also make adapters for lighter sockets to use for USB ports.
Unless I misunderstood your question....Wink

Do this eBay search:  cell phone car charger usb

You'll come up with over 26,000 hits so sort by lowest price first and you'll see a bunch of these:

I have a couple of these and they work great.  Plug into the cig lighter and then plug the USB cords.  You can probably find these af Target, Walmart, or any parts store.

As it turns out I went and bought a 12 volt outlet. I guess I didn't realize that its just like a lighter assembly. For some reason I thought it was much different. Install is underway.
