I've got some rear flares on my '70. They are about 3" wide - not sure if that is what the L-88 flare is like. My car has 15x12 mags (they look a lot like old Keystone wheels, with a lot of rust!) with 4" of backspacing and Mickey Thomson Indy Profile N50x15's (about 12 1/4" wide tread). The tire/wheel combo fills the wide flares pretty well - it could handle about another 1/4 to 1/2 inches of rubber at the fender lip. I love the look but need nicer rims myself. I'd kind of like to go with a 17x11 or 17x12 and a 315/335 size tire. Vette magazine did a series of articles through the '90s called the Big Block from Hell that had flares. They eventually put ZR-1 rims on it (17x9.5, 275s up front and 17x11, 315s out back) which required 3" spacers to fill out the flares. I think a custom wheel with the proper backspacing, around 4 inches, would be the way to go. I wonder if Cragar/Weld make their new SS wheel in a 17x11 width and the backspacing needed for a flared Vette? I'll bet that would cost plenty! Hope this helps.
