Is there a way to test the temp gauge?

Leave the radiator cap on. When the engine cooled, it created a slight vacuum. If you take the cap off, you lose the vacuum. Have the new sender ready in one hand, make the final turn removing the old one with the other hand. Make the switch quickly and you may not lose more than a few ounces. IF the cap is off, or has been, you will have a green river.
