When I try to start my '78, the key will move through the first two positions in the ignition switch but will not go into the final position(start). Can anyone help me with this problem. I am thinking it is the ignition switch itself but, before I go through the trouble tearing into the column I would like to narrow it down first. This car is not equipted with telescopic steering. Any help that you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You don't have to tear the column apart to get the the switch.  Just drop it down.  There is a rod from the key assembly to the switch, and the switch is mounted further down on the column, on the top side under the dash.  It's not that difficult to change/check if you lower the column.

Thanks Ken for the help. Can you tell me what is the easiest way that I might be able to determine if it is the ignition tumbler, or the switch located on the column?

Lift off the ignition switch, and turn the key.  If it turns easily, it's the switch.  If not, it's inside the column.  Could be the linkage or tumblers.  The switch is more likely of the two.

You do need to be aware the switch has some limited ajustment.  If it's too far up or down on the column in it's slotted holes, it won't travel to the correct position.  It will click into place, so it's not hard at all to adjust.  Just take the key out to center the linkage, and install the switch with it in the off positon.  If it's one position off, you probably won't be able to put the mounting screws in place.
