Howdy,
I have a 1969 427 Vette with the transistorized ignition option.
Can I substitute an MSD 8202 coil for the factory unit? The MSD costs $54.00, the factory replacement costs $154.00. The cost is not relevant just the speed that I can replace the unit as I have a MSD 8202 on hand. I just do not want to ruin possibly the factory setup.

I know for a fact that the TI system uses a special coil. Not sure if an MSD coil would work without damaging anything else or not.According to the TI guru, Dave Fiedler, "Transistor
Ignitions use a coil that has very unique electrical characteristics.
Note that ignition coils designed for point style ignition systems will not provide the high secondary voltage that a T.I. coil produces".
I'd contact Dave and see what he has to say about the MSD coil....it might work, it might not.

Hello All I have experimented with various ignition coils.I am assuming you have the OEM stock points distributor and OEM coil,if so I have tested the MSD coil 8202 and found it varied between 2.5 -3.1 ohms,which is not very consistent ohm's.Performance and just running a distributor needs consistent ohms value as the amount of ohm's dictate the amount of voltage to the plugs.I have found through many test that Pertronix coils are more consistent in ohms.They have 3 different coil for their 3 Igniter systems :Igniter I use 3.0 ohms,Igniter II 1.5 ohms,and Igniter III(HEI Style module) .32 ohms(much more for high horsepower engins. The constant 3 ohms is meant for the stock points distributor.My second choice is Acell coil which is also 2.8 ohm and very reliable,then MSD 8202 and OEM which is generally 2.8 - 3.2 ohms.
Best suggestion is to convert your OEM oints system to Pertronix either Igniter I,II, or Igniter III with appropiate coils as mentioned above.

I have the factory optional Transistorized Ignition on my 1969 427 L71 435HP car.
Thanks for the informative reply, but I wonder if the coil data is relevant to the TI ignition. I would want to keep the factory setup as I want the car to be as close to factory ordered as possible. The coil would be hidden in the chrome radio suppression box around distributor so it would be irrelevant as to appearance.
