How the heck do I get at the bolts to remove the wiper door on my '71? I've removed the grille in front of the wiper door, but still can't find the right tool to get to the damn wiper door bolts. What's the trick?

The easiest way is to unbolt the brackets at the firewall, and take the whole assembly out in one piece. The brackets may be shimmed, so look for those when you remove. The canister just unbolts at it's bracket and the coupler is easily accessible. Before you try to take it out, make sure you also take off the bracket for the limit switch. Just 2 screws on top of it. It's kind of awkward to fish in and out so cover your fenders!

In order to avoid the shim issue, I unbolted mine directly. I had to use 1/4"-drive sockets because the 3/8"-drive ratchet handle didn't give me ANY working room. Used a six-inch extension also.

The bolts on mine were all original with typical rust issues. Two of them snapped with the first twist of the wrench. I had Corvette Central bore and insert those holes ($50). I also replaced the bushings and used SS bolts.

Good luck. |thumb|
