I had the same problem until discovering the heater hose vacuum switch was corroded and leaking. I replaced it with a manual cut off, leaving it in the off position, and from that time on the A/C has been awesome.Thumbs%20Up

Vette(s): 1982 Black, ZZ4, Hooker Side Pipes, 3.55 Rear, Rebuilt & upgraded 700R4, All new suspension, brakes, & new Charcoal interior.
Get a piece of 3" thick foam rubber, cut so it's a little larger than the duct opening (by your right foot) and shove it into the vent, when you want heat pull it out. It stops that source of heat. But you need those shut off valves on both hoses for sure.
On my '82 the stock shut off valve only works when the AC is turned on, not sure about other years.
