Thanks to a heavy handed P/O, threads into the hood for one support mounting bolt on my 68 have been stripped. Does anyone have a suggestion for repair? Any advice or idea is welcome. Thanks in advance, Bob

"Nut-serts"...similar to "Heli-coils", but much more suited for this particular application. You drill the hole a bit larger, and then these "Nut-serts" screw into there, making their own threads. Then you have a solid insert to attach your fastener to.
There is another thread on this somewhere, with links to the products. I can look for it if you want, but it may be a while...nap-time for me! zzzzzzzzzzzz

Adam, Thanks for the nutserts idea. I did a search, but didn't come with much yet. Do you know how the original bolts were secured? Captive nuts in the fiberglass or maybe imbedded metal reinforcement with tapped holes? Thanks again for your ideas. Bob

There is a sheet metal "backing plate' made into the fiberglass there. It was put into the mold, and the 'glass formed around it. It's not very thick, that's for sure!
I'll look and see if I can come up with the info...

Otay...take a look at THIS...this is the same type of product I have used before, just a different brand. Adams' Apple2007-03-15 19:59:37

Robert,  I have used a tool similar to the one in the link on sheet metal in the past.  Never used it in fiberglass but dont see why it wont work, especially if there is a metal backing plate.  This one is at Norther took and equipment but any industrial supply should have something similar.

Update: Its been a busy week, but this is what I did to solve the problem. The local body shop has a pop rivet type tool for inserting threaded fittings into a blind hole-"nut-serts". The owner loaned me the installation tool and 4 inserts but would not let me pay him to do the job! He's a former 69 B/B owner, and "just likes old vettes". Worked great and only took about 5 min! Thanks All, Bob

For future reference here is another link for Keenserts. I have used them many times on aircraft and spacecraft.
