Thanks a lot. These photos are great. I knew of the rubber grommets but had idea of the latch mechanism. I will be working on this the rest of the week. Home Depot tonight for some tool making material.

Glad they were helpful. Unless you have the wiper trough cover you may be able to do with a long "custom bent" screwdriver. A towel over your windshield may save a scratch or two.

John, did you get the hood open?

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
Played golf yesterday. Saw your message this morning and after rain stopped around 12:30 I decided to work on the hood. I got flat stock earlier in the week an made tool similar to yours.
Propped drivers side of hood open as far as I could. The hardest part was getting the grommet out of the hole. It was inserted from inside and was blocking the lever when I pushed it in. Once I got that moved, the lever was no more than a 1/4 to 1/2 inch inside and visible from where I had to press down. I bent the tool a little (45% on flat side) allowing me to reach from above rather than from side. Pressed a socket extension down on the tool and it unlatched with ease.
I need a new cable now. The end connection was broken. It also looks like this may have been an after market because it was long with a bit of slack as some other threads noted.
Thanks again, your pic did the trick.

Glad it worked. The afermarket cables have very few positive reviews but I doubt originals are to be found anywhere. www.riksvet.com has a cross cable that is USA made that may be better than the "offshore" stuff, his part number is HOD166 but I cant post a link to the part.

Thanks for the tip on Riksvet. I went to website and ordered the cable. The cable is HOD132, the part you gave got me to the full assembley picture but it is only the tabs to secure the cable.
By the way I uploaded my vette picture. Did it show on the repley? I haven't been active on the site until this week when I reupped my membership and posted my thread. I don't see the picture when I get a reply back.
But, you got me back on the road again.
