Sounds like light sanding on the column will do the trick. For all other trim parts, my suggestion is not to attempt to remove the black and to redye red. SEM automotive interior dye will do the trick and is available from most automotive paint suppliers.

I would purchase a new carpet set in the correct color and would not attempt to dye carpet with the SEM.

Most interior paints and dyes can be removed with lacquer thinner. I would get off as much as possible, then redye. I agree about the carpet. Seats are subject to a lot of wear, so I would be concerned about dying red over black on them. But it can't hurt to try.

SEM paint is one of the best spray paints (my opinion) out there.
It is usually sold at most auto body supply stores.
Their Trim Black (#39143) is the closest match to factory black around.

SEM is a brand name. http://www.sem.ws/
I shot their code 411 dark blue over black twenty years ago and have never had a problem with it.
