Vette(s): 1978 Corvette Light Blue Pulled from the swamps of Miami! Its a driver and back on the road!
I have a 1978 and removed mine the other year. Can't remember all the details but Once the screws are out holding the speedometer I was able to just pull out the speedometer enough to remove the screws and cable, I believe mine had a snap on to hold it in place either way I had enough movement to reach behind. I was surprised how light the speedo was? I had to get it working and put a new needle on it. No problems snapping the cable back in and screw and push back into place. I'm no exprt but that is how mine went.Thumbs UpBB78

Hey Chuck..do you have Skype? If you don't know what it is then I assume you don't have it. It would be easier using that instead of memory.

That's really good..ok well..I have been thinking about doing this for a while now but I can't get video Skype to work on my phone yet..I think it's a Beta thing again..I want to be able to see what people are asking about before an answer is given..I think it's a logical next step for this site to move to visual video internet..it could be run in between each of us..and not bog down the site itself..I will work on the phone again tonight and see if I can get it to work..if not I am up for an upgrade on a phone and may just go get a new one that will do more of what I want..all the other person would need is an video camera for the computer and there ya go..I may post this on a separate post and see what kind of response I get..

I tried removing my speedo at this point but it is still secured in place, so I have also removed the center lower dash pad cover below the steering column.
According to instructions I found online, they state that I am now to remove the bracket that holds the steering column in place.  Then I am to reach behind the speedo housing and unplug the circuit board.  Then I am supposed to remove the speedo cable and then the speedo housing.
That's where these particular instructions end but I assume that I would then have to remove the 2 shoulder screws to remove the speedometer.

Any comments?

Thanks.

Chuck, where are these shoulder screws that you're referring to? I did my speedo and tach just recently so I'm very familiar with how to get them out of the dash.

Did you already remove the cable and the big wiring harness plug that goes into the PC board?

I stopped after removing the center lower dash pad cover which gives access to the bracket that holds the steering column in place.

I found other instructions that state that after I remove the 3 screws that secure the speedo I should be able to give it a tug and be able to reach behind it to remove the speedo cable.
I tried this but the speedo seemed to be secured by something else so I didn't force it.

Any help?

Thanks.
