After I replaced my starter last week (see other post "hot start blues"), It was suggested to take a good look at the fusible link.

Well, here's a picture of the main one, at the starter. The exposed one, on the left, was also covered with a rubber bushing, but it was cracked by age, not blowned by over heat (I think).

Is this a danger to leave it exposed like that, or I should 1)tape it 2)replace only the bushing or 3) replace the whole fusible link.

Anytime you have a bare electrical hot lead, it is a possible problem.  You MUST cover it up.   Tape works for a short time, but can deteriorate quickly.  Heat shrink or friction tape is better.  A vacuum line split and installed over the wire also works, if taped or sealed. You can also coat it with a bit of silicone gasket sealer, or a liquid rubber.

No matter what you do, clean it with some brake parts cleaner first.  This leaves no residue, and the adhesive will stick better and longer.

I would make sure that nice shiny bolt in that picture is covered with something,to keep it from rubbing on that cable too
