I came across an auction the other day for a RH side louver (grille) for a '71-'72. They said they would be willing to trade for a correct '70 louver. I wasn't aware of a difference between '70 and '71 side louver. I asked him what the difference was and he replied.."1970 has chrome only on the horizontal bars of the "egg crate" and have a slight rise in the bars. 1971 and 1972 have a full chrome horizontal and vertical bars on the "egg crate"
plus from my own experience they need a slight "shaving" to fit into the body." Just curious, does this guy know what he's talking about?

I don't know about the "shaving" to fit the body but he's right about the 70 having the chrome on the horizontal bars only. I think it was changed to both horizontal and vertical chrome bars shortly after the 71 was in production.

He's right on the chrome. It did change.
As far as "shaving" to get one to fit, temper that with the knowledge that no two Corvettes were the same...some parts had to be "massaged" at the factory to get them to fit. So.....it's entirely possible that a side vent grill from one car may not necessarily fit right into another car...ya just never know.

Yup. I learned sumpin new too. Interesting. Then I guess there were different part #'s on the back?

That's a new one to me too. I always thought the '70 and '71 had the same grill (no chrome, just paint) and that it changed to chrome tips in '72. Thanks for the info!

Because the grills are a bright metal I was under the impression that when they were painted the bars were either masked off or the paint removed afterwards.
Don't know about whether there was a difference in the bars being raised on one or the other. There were very few changes between the '70 and '71 model years because of the short '70 production run (Jan thru Jul of '70) so I'd think they would physically be the same part.
