Vette(s): 2004 Commemorative Edition Coupe, Auto w/HUD. 13K miles in 2015. Sold 1982 Red Coupe
I got from the National Corvette Museum my build sheet and my window sticker.
According to the build sheet, the exterior color was 70L SPECTRA RED AND 70U SPECTRA RED. Why it lists two paint specs, I don't know. The tops are glass. Maybe the urethane bumpers.

According to the window sticker, the exterior color is 70L RED METALLIC.

Is this a case of the same paint having two different names?

It was repainted in 1996, and I believe they used 70L, but who knows. |headscratch|

Anyone have a book that lists the color choices for 1982, other than the Blackbook? It just says red.

The L and U mean lower and upper. Two tone Vettes would have two different codes.

Thanks Mike. That makes perfect sense. I see you have a couple of good looking two-tones.
Now when I get the touch up paint, I guess I ask for 1982 Red.

Well, unlike interior colors, with exterior colors the catalog vendors DO want your GM paint code.

Any idea why GM would have two different names for the same color code? |headscratch|

Don't know. Marketing gone awry? They do always seem to give red exotic names, tho.

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!
My old 66 Grand Prix was SeaFoam green. The exact same color had 5 different color names, depending on what division used it.

Ya know, I checked my build sheets for my Pace Car and the Silver Anniversary.
The Pace Car says 19L black lower, 19U black upper, 47M silver middle. MIDDLE?
SA says 13L silver lower, 13U silver upper, 07M gray middle.
Maybe because the entire Vette was painted a single color with the second color applied over the base color later on down the production line?
Were the Bowling Green two-tone base coat, clear coat paints sprayed the same way? Or would there be too much paint build up with the enamels? Did they paint the top and bottoms the different colors and then apply the clear?
Hmmmm???
