btw...if the spring that holds the "flapper" up is broke, it can be replaced, and is available.

Unfortunately mine is the one that is on the post riveted to the handle... handle is cheap enough (relatively speaking) The other one has a replacement that you just slide in and not have to take off the handle I think... and I sometimes get a little carried away with covering everything... my wife say's it looks like an operating table... hey... paint jobs not cheap...

The "butterfly" spring you mentioned works well on the "flapper" part, tho. The only problem with those is they tend to wear/scrape on the inside of the handle, and even they will eventually break. Still, a good option if ya don't want to go thru the hassel of removing the handle from the door.
Be wary of foriegn made outer door handles. I have seen some of them, and they ain't purty. Cheap made, and cheap chrome...not a good thing.
I ordered one from ZIPS and they had the import too for about $40 less but I ain't much on that import stuff... I would have bought a Honda ... It is suppose to be a GM Resto.. whatever that is... if it ain't right I can send it back... too much work to put back half-assed...
UPDATE: Looks like ZIP has a replacement spring for this on their web-site now if I could make something to replace the stud once I grind it off, I could have an "original" spare handle.

Pay especially close attention to the linkage routing. That is the trickiest part. Starting the two nuts really isn't that bad.

Good luck,
Take a look at the following link. I replaced both with Ecklers products.
As always... Thanks guy's and especially that site Scott,as it was very informative.. I see not much trouble doing it now. I will cover the surrounding area as I know how easy it is to slip one time...

UPDATE: New handle is in and works fine. Not that bad of a job and I was able to get my fingers in to start the nuts. The new handle form Zips looks great. Only thing is.... it did not come with a new gasket, but i did order new ones ($3) thinking maybe it wouldn't. Once you have done it.. I would say it is a 3-4 on a 1-10 degree difficulty.
Now... off to Nags Head after Ernesto goes by...
