Differential carrier

Can anyone tell me how much of a space there should be between the diff carrier bushings and the frame.  I have the new bushings in and am having trouble squeezing it back on.  I seen one video which showed enough space to put a pry bar in to pry it off, but it wasn't clear enough to show me the spacing.  I am thinking they need to go on farther but not sure, should of thought to measure spacing before i took the carrier off.

Cindy, from the underside of the frame section to the top of the differential carrier 7/8" on my '73. Hope this helps, did you ever get your bumper parts ??

Yes that will help, I'm pretty sure they have a ways to go and i am not sure how i'm going to get them all the way in.  The new bushings of course have a plastic or nylon center not like the old ones that were steel, so you can't put any force on them.  Yes I did receive my package on Friday thank you very much already have them installed.

Sounds interesting, never replaced those bushings myself. Sounds like a big c-clamp or two to compress the two members together. How about a large piece of steel plate with a hole drilled in the middle and a longer bolt to compress the bushing in to place ?? Make sure the metal surfaces that make contact with the bushings are clean and smooth, perhaps some lubrication like some petroleum jelly would help things slide together ?? Good luck, maybe someone else has first hand experience on this one.

did all that lubed, bottle jack wood blocks, lge c  clamp and flat steel on top, going to spray it with some other lube and keep putting pressure on it and hopefully it edges its way in..  I don't know if they needed replaced but being i was doing a frame off I could not see why I would leave them 40 + year old bushings in when I have replaced all the others

 Too late now I assume, but you can put the bushings in the freezer for a few hours, and then install them. They will shrink in size when cold like that, making them a little easier to install. Wink

Thinking about trying to pound it back off, sanding new paint off and using different lube, could set it outside overnight and try.   these bushings are installed on carrier already won't fit in my deep freeze
