Carpet 72' Coupe

The carpet in Ol' Blu was pulled out last week getting ready for the body shop work. I installed it last year, but yeah, I did this backwards. The carpet vendor used was in my opinion pretty poor. It didn't fit well, was not shaped very well and required too much fitting/cutting to make it fit. Some areas were too big and others short, very frustrating. I did not care for the feel of the plush material nor the shiny backing that even glue would not stick to. Not having the original carpet 1972 for a pattern from GM made it even worse. The old carpet was replaced by me probably 30 years ago and is now horribly disintegrated.

I've been out of the C3 restoring projects world for a long time now but first thought would be Mid-America as they had pretty good interior stuff back in the day (a Gathering was held there years ago). But their place was bombed by a tornado last summer and it may be awhile before they're back in production. Al Knoch used to be the gold standard for interiors - can't say if that's still true tho'. Eklers, Corvette Central and Corvette America (now Top Flight) were big in the past as well. Hope this is some help.

Something to ask is, Is it press molded? Even if it is you'll probably still need to use a heat gun in the real sharp corners. At least that was my experience helping a friend do his '66 roadster, especially right behind the seats.

Looks like most of the vendors use ACC and some of the reviews in various places are not that sterling. I think I would go with Al Knoch for a carpet kit.

The Auto Custom Carpet looks to be a better choice. If anyone has had experience using their carpet set please let me know. If they are at Fall Carlise next week I'll check that out.

I was a licensed ACC distributor for a while in the mid '90s, and have used them in several vehicles, my '74 being one of them. Highly recommend them. Good quality pieces, and colors seem to be "correct". 👍
