hi guys!.
is the brown wire in this pic my tach wire? i assumed with a1974, i had a mechanical tach. my tach hasnt worked due to the fat that the car was switched to HEI and the cable not re-connected to the new dist.
the wire comes out of the ignition switch cluster and has a female end (the end is resting on the steering column).

thanks guys!

On my 72...that is the Radio Capacitor Connection. I have a little capacitor up under there that it plugs into. I think it is a noise suppressor.

The '74 does have a mechanical tach, unless it has been swapped.
Lonnie is prolly right...I'd have to look at the wiring diagram to say what it is for.
If your tach isn't working, does the HEI dist have the tach drive on it? If it doesn't, the only way to get the tach working is to either install an electrical tach, or an HEI dist with the tach drive.

thanks guys. i was thinking/hoping it was maybe a radio wire too. a PO had put and aftermarket radio in at some point.
i was just hoping it wasnt something that had to do with my ignition wiring.
thanks for your help. ill tell you what, i'm gonna get all the previously bubba'd stuff cleaned up on this car if it kills me... one wire at a time.....
thanks again!

If I remember correctly...my 72 had the Capacitor mounted on the column up under the dash. Mine looks kinda like a Condenser out of a Distributer.

We carry an HEI distributor that has been converted to tach drive. That is the easiest way to get your tach working. Otherwise, install a '75 or newer tach and copy the wiring from a '75 wiring diagram.
