Went to open my hood this morning, pulled on the released from a standing position and flew backwards with the release in my hand and what appeared to be a very skinny wire attached to it.

I am going to look at the manuals and vendors like Doc Rebuild to get part but my question is - how do I open the hood now to install again? Are there any tricks to this?

Please help and be explicit as I am not the most astute car tinkerer mechanically.

Thanks in advance

Peter

Take a look at these two threads...should give you enough info to get that bugger open...

Hood open 1

Hood open 2

You may well wind up going in from underneath, but take a look at these threads, and see if it helps.

On a '71, the easiest will be to remove the side grate on the driver side and reach up past the vaccuum tank to reach the release.  Try to find a diagram or better yet a similar car to lok at to see exactly where to push(or pull).

I have been there and done that.  The above posts should get your hood opened.  If I could give some advise it would be DON'T  buy an after market cable.  Go with th GM cable it's  more dollars but, worth ever penny.  Just my .02.

I agree with the purchase of the GM cable. Think about how long the one that is on it was there. Then think about when the next person will be making the repair. Money saved in the long run...

Definately agree, the aftermarket cables have issues. I went through two aftermarket cables in less than 6 months. One broke at a car show during my showing of the engine compartment. Luckily I could open th hood in less than 1 minute with a flat head screwdriver. The other one is still on there, half baked but working.

There is also someone on this site that makes an alternate cable that looks real sturdy but not original in appearance. Worth looking into.
