Hey Guys,
My front urethane bumper (not the original, it was replaced by my uncle when he owned it, but i think it was replaced with the cheapest available) is badly cracked along the bumper. Right now I have Krazy glue, (yes that's right, just imagine what that looks like), holding it together in a few spots. I realize that there is no chance in saving the bumper and I can't wait to get a new one, but I'm going to have to. I'm looking for a temporary solution so it will look a little better than it does now and I was condering bondo. I've never used it or looked into it before, so I was wondering if it will work on the urethane material and would it be possible to do what I'm talking about or is it crazy? I was going to take it off, sand it down, fill in the cracks, sand again, prime and repaint. Like I said, nothing fancy or great, but good enough that people don't look at it and say, "man that vette is f'ed up." Ideas/Suggestions??

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.
Have you stopped and talked to a body shop about this? They would know whether or not it can be done...and what to use.. I think they would give you all the info you need, if you just ask...

I've used bondo on the fiberglass inside the car under the battery and it works/looks fine, but nobody looks at it...right? the front of your car...its gonna take a LOT of patience.

Don't do it!!! Bondo doesn't flex, so it will soon lift and fall off the flexible bumper. I don't know what else would work as filler, but bondo isn't it. Joe

Thanks for the info. I'll probably just wait it out now until I get a new bumper. Or until the one I have on right now falls completely apart which could be very soon judging from the current condition it is in.

flexible poly glazing putty
go to a auto paint store and ask them for it or another item to do the job, it is made to fill and flex.

This should be a $500-$800 fix as my 73 bumper is cracked and I am thinking of replaceing it with a hard glass bumper. No go with the bondo!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE.
Depending on whom you go to for this repair the bumper and retainer's cost approx $400 or less and then add in paint and labor to install $100 to $400. I hope this helps
