Backup light switch

I am attempting to troubleshoot the backup light switch in the console. Trouble is I can't get the shifter knob off to completely remove the shifter console. It will easily unscrew right up tp the last couple of turns then stops. I don't want to break anything. Any suggestions?

Did you remove the chrome button first? That has to come of before the knob will unscrew.
