another horn question

Hi guys.
i've read and re-read the last horn thread and i'm still somewhat confused.  my horn doesn't work either and i'm trying to see if the horns themselves are the problem.  can someone expain to me the procedure to "jumping the horns"?
Am I to attach a wire to both horns and then run the wire to the positive terminal of the battery?  And what about grounding them?

Also, on a '74, is my horn relay under the hood, or the dash (i can't seem to locate it under the dash).
Please help!  Im in dire straits here.  my car won't pass inspection because of the horn not working and "corvettes at carlisle" is in a week and a half!

I believe your horn relay on that year is on the left side of the engine compartment. You can check them the way you stated. It would be better to locate the horn relay, see if it has 12v coming to one terminal, one of the wires goes to the horn and the last one is a ground. Identify the hot wire, the wire going to the horns, and then ground the last wire, that will check the relay.

 most times your problem will be in either the relay or the horn ring within the steering column, when the ring makes a circuit it completes the ground rather than the power wire,,you can test the actual horn by simply running a wire to the horn from a 12 volt lead,, it should be grounded allready good luck  rd

The horn relay is under the dash, normally taped to the wiring harness above the fuse box.

To test the horn(s), attach a wire to the driver side horn, and then to 12+ source. (The alternator is closest.) This will sound both of the horns, if you have the dual horn option. Do not unplug the horns, just stick the jumper wire in the connector.

thanks for all of your help guys!

joel, that was the ticket.  when i first tried to test the horn, i only had a hot wire attached to the driver's side horn.  the passenger side was not in the loop.  when i kept the horns hooked together as they should be and attached the wire to the driver's side horn, i touched the battery and they sounded.  it was a weak beep, but a beep just the same.  i rigged up the old "push-button" just to get me through inspection but don't worry, it won't be permanent.  at least now i can drive the car while i look for the real problem.
