Vette(s): had a really nice one. sold it to a good friend. Purchased 2004 custom coupe in Feb. 2009 did not tell anyone here until August 2009. BAD I KNOW.
Okay so the correct answer is Yes it is the alarm.  Now mine is a factory install way back when, and it still works.  It uses a different key than the doors and ingition.  Once it is turned on, like that phrase, it will sound the horn if some one, even you, if you open the doors and/or the hood with out it being turned off.

Good luck,
Larry

Vette(s): 72 coupe, 350 4 spd, modified motor, exhaust, tires & wheels. '91 ZR1, modified exhaust.
Shortly after I bought my used 72, I started fixin' stuff. One was to find out what that key switch was for on the rear deck. That's all that was there. There were no wires or anything going to it. I did some researching, and this was back in 78 when you didn't have a lot of resources available like you do today, and found that it was indeed for an alarm. GM started installing these on the 72 models in place of the fiber optics. So if you have one on an earlier model, it wasn't factory installed. In order for me to get mine working, and I wanted everything on the car working, I needed to install everything on that system.

Hey Rick I have a corvette history book and it has a picture of a 70 vette that has the key lock for the the alarm so it must be the first year for that.

The alarm system was first installed as an option in May, 1968. It was made a standard feature in '72, after dropping the fiber-optics.
Most cars that have the alarms don't work, or they don't have all of the components to make them work anymore. They're not that complicated, so getting one to function is not that big of a deal, if you have all of the stuff. The one on my '74 has always worked...at this point, it's just for showing off the marvelous technology available back then.
Of course no one pays any attention to one going off, except to get annoyed at it!

That's exactly right Joel. As soon as I get time, mine's coming off.

If the ignition is not getting juice and the carb is not getting fuel...how they gonna take it without dragging it off.
