I recently replaced my valve stem seals, and in the process of putting things together I noticed a bare wire but not burned thru. It was red and it looked liked some kind of fusible link. It is behind the distributor and under the wiper motor. Now my ammeter seems to be inop... my wiring diagram show a Blk/Wht and a Blk wire... is this red wire something to with it also. seems only way to get to it is take off the windshield wiper motor.. any suggestions. I was able to insulate the red wire but If it's a fusible link it may be blown?

Is the charging system working?  If not, I would look at the fusible links,  If so, the links are probably okay.  Just put a volt meter on the back of the alternator with the key off, and there should be battery volts.  Running it should be over 13 volts.  If its bad the link is burned.

Thanks Ken... I'll check it tomorrow, but I think she is charging OK. I didn't put a voltmeter on the alternator but I did have voltage with a test light..

Well I checked it out and I have about 14 volts running.. and everything works except the ammeter gage.. Is there a fuse or  alink someplace for it... besides the fuze panel?for the gage somwhere..

If everything else is working, and you have 14 volts the fuses and links should be okay.  You may just have a failed gauge.  Make sure you also have 14 volts to the battery.  It may not be getting there.

I need to check a diagram at home before I stick my foot in my mouth.  There are a couple ways for the gauge to work, and I need to make sure which one before I go on.  Give me a bit.

I believe that there is a fusible link right up next to the horn relay that supplies power to the ammeter. My ammeter went out and this was the problem. I am pretty sure this is where the ammeter on my 70 gets its power from. You may want to check all the connections at the ammeter and also check the fusible link. On mine the wire had come undone from the fusible link. I sliced the link open and sortered the wire back to the link and reinsulated the link. All works well now.

just went through the same thing. My amp meter stopped working and I couldn't figure out where the problem was. Had to bring it to  crossed flags corvette up in Budd lake. Ended up being one of the wires was broken between the horn relay and the meter. The amp meter runs through the horn relay, who would of thought. Fixed now and working fine. I just can't figure out this electrical stuff. Take it to the pros every time, burning wire doesn't appeal to me.

According to the wiring diagram it does feed thru the horn relay, but is the fusible link on the firewall? Under the wiper motor?

I believe that fusible link is between the Alt to starter solenoid, then from the starter solenoid to the amp meter.
