Hi all,
I want to do some engine dress up. I have a stock 63 amp alternator which I believe has an external voltage regulator ( '69 ). I want to put in an 80 or 100 amp chrome plated unit. I can buy one from Ecklers for about $199.00 or I can get one from JCWhitney for $119.00. Hummmm, 199....119, 199....119 duh tuff choice :-). The problem is this....the ones from JCWhitney are all single wire units with the single wire going to the battery. If I hook up a single wire to the battery and just tape up the plug going to the voltage regulator...what happens? Do my electrical accessories, lamps and whatever still work or do I have to rewire the car?

Hi Glenn,
I replaced the original alternator in my 81 with a chrome one. It had the same wiring as the original was 100 amp (old one was 80) and is gorgious
. They are offered by a company that does tons of alternator and sells them on e-bay. Mine cost $115 plus S&H and comes with a 1 year warranty. The company is called Beavco, and the owner is Glen Beavers. You can e-mail him and give him your specifics and he should be able to hook you up. His e-mail (last year when I got mine) is zbeav@aol.com. Hope this helps. Tom.

Hi Glenns,, I just installed a 100 amp chrome from Jegs that matched the original wiring . There are kits also available to convert to single wire out there if you root around a little . I am getting near to the end of my winter under hood redo,,,finally,, and hope to be cruising soon !!

Hi Geo,
I am getting real confused. I sent an e-maill to the place recommended by Tom ( above ). The shop told me that '69s had a built in regulator. I am under the assumption that a built in voltage regulator IS a single wire unit. If that assumption is true, I don't know what I have. There is a single wire exiting the back of the unit and a plug with 2 wires attached to the side. I thought the plug's two wires led to the external regulator. What am I missing here?
Are you going to the show n shine? I remember a post saying you lived close.
