Sorry for the double post but I forgot to ask something else which may be related to the problem.
While cruisin, the speedo needle was "floating" anywhere from 5 - 8 mph. Tach needle was steady. Could this have anything to do with the brown wire breaking off or is this a seperate issue?

That is the speedometer cable sticking in the housing. You can disconnect the cable from the back of the speedo and pull the cable out. Lube it with a thin layer of grease, and put it back in the housing, then reconnect it. This usually works. I have done a LOT of them in various cars, including ours. Sometimes it dies not work and you need to replace the cable and housing to fix the problem.
