hello C3VR!
I have a problem... Battery went dead from what I thought was my interior lights staying on but also found that my fuel pump is also running continously even when the key is out; this is draining my battery. When I move the headlight switch dimmer, the interior lights go out but come back on, this switch is 3 months old. Right now I am pulling out the old switch and installing the old one - the problem with it was the dimmer was worn out. Maybe this will be the problem or part of the problem. Seems I have a few going on here at the same time.
I just installed an 85 pump 2 weeks ago, rebuilt and balanced the TB's and replaced the dist. cap - nothing else don't since and no problem since.
We had some good rain in Phoenix just before this started but I've been in the rain before with this vette - It is a daily driver.
Any thoughts from ya'all would help!
Thanks!
Phill

The fuel pump relay may be stuck on. Try tapping on it with a screwdriver, to see if it turns off. If not, you may need to replace it. The fuel pump should only run for a couple of seconds when you turn the key on, unless the engine is running. I'd bet on the relay being stuck.

Joel,
For us lazy dummies, where is the relay located?
And how big of a hammer should be used for the tap?

If you know where the battery is , it's by the ECM ( electric control module ). You may have to move the battery a bit to get to it. If you tap it and the pump stops running, replace the relay.

Thanks! Found the relay in my assem. manual. Cannot reach it though and will have to remove the battery and ECM to get to it. I will try tapping on it before I do all this and see if it shuts off. It is probably 25 years old so will replace it regardless.
If the replacement doesn't fix the problem, would I then be looking at an ECM issue??
Oh yeah, the interior lights staying on was a problem with the headlight switch which I fixed. Funny how two things happen at once and seem to be related on these vettes!

Thanks!

Not likely. Once the ign. is turned off, the ECM should power down. The only other possibility would be a short in the relay wiring...considering the location...that might be a reality.

Gave the relay a good wack and sure enough - it now shuts off. Sooo glad its not a wiring issue
Got a new replacement anyway - $29 @ Napa.
Anything I need to know before I remove the battery & ECM to replace the relay?
Thanks Joel & Denny!

I'm having the same kind of problem with mine with some twists.... But this thread has helped a bunch... I would love to meet the engineer that put that relay behind that plate though

Phill's Vette, did your melt the positive junction block in the battery box?

YES! It did
As for the engineer that placed it there - must have been the same guy that built the car AROUND the damm heater core! OMG what a PITA that was! - like a frame off kind of thing... just to get to it! Caused me major PTCSS - Post Tramatic Covrette Stress Syndrom
Gotta love these cars though!
