im currently in the process of gutting my 80 vette`s red interior and customizing it to black . after a close look i noticed that my gauges in the center panel arent working . then i noticed that my speedometer wasnt working eigther ( tach is working ). i figured that since the engine swap the people that i got the car from never hooked anything back up ( must have been too much work for them ) . my question is , am i better off changing the center panel for a set i know work or am i better off checking the whole system ? as far as i can tell everything is connected . how would i know if anything wasnt connected ? is this an easy fix ? or schould i just pay a professional to rob me ?

If it worked before, I would not think you would need all new guages. Check on the right side of the engine compartment above the heater plenum. There should be a plastic "cover" on the bay for the wipers (engine side). This is where a lot of the interior electrical connections come in from the engine area. Open that up and make sure there is no corrosion in the plugs or that they weren't pulled open.
Also, do you have cruise? If so make sure you didn't remove the speedo cable from the transducer for the engine swap. that may be why it isn't working
