I need some guick help. How does the dang shift knob come off? I unscrewed the button, But I can't get the round knob off. I don't want to break anything puttin on the new boot.
Oh, did say automatic?

The round knob itself should simply unscrew after you remove the button. Probably too many years in place and it's locked on pretty good.
When I had my '78, I replaced the round knob with a chrome on bought through one of the parts houses. It looked much sharper than with the black knob that had discolored from years of sweaty hands grabbing it.

i had the same prob.. it just didn't want to come off... finally had to cut it off and got another knob
