short of dropping the dash to check the ammeter gauge itself, are there any tests that i can perform to make sure the wiring is correct?
Ammeter has never worked since I've had the car. Alternator has been replaced coincidently and charging circuit appears to work fine.
Has anyone ever measured the voltages at the 2-pin plug on the alternator?
What should it read in a working system?
Any help would be appreciated.

go to the junk and clip of one of the 2 prong harness and splice it into your car. those terminals get screwed up you might even be able to just clean them. and did you check so if the gauge is even connected?
