Was just going to put new carpet in, but ended up taking more out. That's what always happens.

After the carpet (then seats) came out, I started looking at the console. It needed some work, so I took that out, too. Boy, is that a pita! Lots of wires, vacumm lines and endless fasteners, even looking at a diagram.
I priced a few repo console pieces- it totaled up to about $700! Makes me mad when you can buy a complete Chevelle/camaro Console all done for well under a grand. And the $700 doesn't include everything- you have to still use all older parts beneath the structure.
I decided to clean it up, spray it satin black and buy $200 worth of the main essentials (parking/heat AC lenses, wood grain kit, 2 fiber optics, new cig ashtray (no smokin' tho), etc. My interior is in nice shape, seats still fairly nice. I'd rather have the console be an 8 and match the rest of the car, then have it stick out like a sore thumb being a 10.
Now, since the floorboards are bare, I'm going for heat thermal barrier. Going with Eastwoods, about $150, but just the stuff I'm looking for. Gonna install that, then throw down the old (still usable) floor thin insulation, then underlayment and carpet.
For those of you wanting to tear out your console, take it slow. There's a lot in there. But in a few hours, it'll come out.
I'm glad I'm doing it like this. It would of bugged me not to do it when i had the chance.

Yes, there was still some mouse feed inside that console from years ago.
I hate mice! Just being able to clean it out makes me feel better.

It's tedious pulling out the upper trim plate- only four screws you
say. No, there's a lot more under. In order to get it out, invert it
and unattach, well, basically everything you see. Take a ton a pictures,
your memory will fail you if you don't.

I used some metal/chrome polish that always seemed to work- and the ashtray area turned out great. It doesn't look like it in the pics (flash and still buffing it), but most of it is concealed inside the trim plate.
The ashtray itself was a no go. New ones are like $10.

Here's the top trim plate after sanding and masked. It still has some scratches and gouges that you can't take out completely (character), but after the paint, it'll still present way better.

I left the stock data plate on (masked off). A bit faded but I like that true, original look still.

You're right to do it all while you're in there! You will kick yourself if you don't and then have to tear it apart again. Its lookin' good!

Well, the Eastwood thermal heat barrier kit is taking longer than I thought. I have at least 6 hours into it yesterday- today i'll finish. Probabbly a couple more hours.
Pics on the way.
